Tainted Love” was written by Edward C. “Ed” Cobb. It was originally recorded by the American soul artist Gloria Jones in 1964, and released in May 1965, failing to chart in either the US or the UK.
However, it gained significant popularity and achieved iconic status when the British synth-pop duo Soft Cell released their cover version. It was released in July 1981 with as the lead single frome their debut album, “Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret”. Soft Cell’s rendition became a massive hit, topping the charts in multiple countries incl. the UK, Canada, South Africa and Australia, and becoming one of the defining songs of the 1980s.
