Ultravox – Dancing With Tears In My Eyes
“Dancing with Tears in My Eyes” is a song by the British new wave band Ultravox. It was released in May 1984 with “Building” on the B-side as the second single rom their seventh studio album “Lament.”
The song is characterized by its energetic synth-driven sound, pulsating rhythm, and emotive lyrics. The lyrics depict a post-apocalyptic scenario, expressing feelings of despair and devastation caused by a nuclear disaster. According to lead singer Midge Ure, the lyrics were inspired by the Nevil Shute book “On the Beach”, which is about a group of people in Australia awaiting nuclear radiation. Despite the dark subject matter, the song maintains an upbeat tempo and a catchy melody.
The music video was directed by Chris Cross and Midge Ure.
“Dancing with Tears in My Eyes” was a commercial success, reaching the top ten on music charts in several countries, including #3 in the United Kingdom. Its combination of poignant lyrics, along with its infectious melody and sound, made it one of Ultravox’s most popular and enduring tracks.
